At-Home Burial

Pet burial at home. Pet euthanasia. Dog and cat euthanasia. Small animal veterinarian. Gainesville

Burial of euthanized pets is legal in Alachua County, Florida if done properly and in accordance with local regulations. According to Florida law, you must bury your pet at least two feet below the surface and avoid areas of flooding. You must also own the property on which you are burying your pet or have permission for pet burial from the property owner. See the attached link for more details on Florida laws regarding pet burials. And see below for helpful tips and guidelines regarding pet burial.

General Guidelines and Helpful Tips Regarding Pet Burial

  • Check your local county ordinances for regulations regarding pet burial in your area.
  • If you are unsure if there are gas lines or water lines buried around your planned grave site, then call your local utilities' office.
  • An adequate depth for the grave is three to five feet, depending on how large your pet is. A strict minimum of two feet of soil should be on top of the body.
  • Consider using sawdust, shredded paper, or lime powder (calcium hydroxide) sprinkled under and over the body to speed up the decomposition process and reduce odor of decomposition. Lime can be purchased at most hardware or livestock feed stores. See product description for safety hazards.
  • If you have cremated your pet and would like to bury the ashes, consider mixing the ashes in with potting soil before burying them and then covering this with a layer of pure potting soil on top.  This will be better for plant health and will discourage other animals from ingesting the soil that is mixed with ashes.
  • If you have any questions about the burial process and your plan for burial, please contact us.
