Cremation is considered the safest and preferred option for post-mortem care in euthanized pets. This is because improper burial can inadvertently result in the leaching of euthanasia drugs into the environment. Euthanasia drugs are also highly toxic if consumed by wildlife such as scavenger birds.
If you do elect for burial of your pet at home or in a pet cemetery, please make sure that you are abiding by laws and recommendations regarding pet burials. For your convenience we have provided guidance for pet burials in the information below.
We can provide clay paw prints, ink paw prints, and fur clippings during the home euthanasia appointment if desired. These mementos are provided at no additional charge. If you have special requests for mementos, beyond the options listed above, please let us know before the appointment.
We use Crevasse's Pet Funeral Home in Gainesville for all of our pet cremations. We coordinate transportation of your pet and payment for cremation to Crevasse's Pet Funeral Home after the euthanasia appointment. They will call you once your pet's ashes are ready to be picked up from their facility, if you elect for private cremation.
Crevasse's Pet Funeral Home also has options for memorial jewelry and additional clay paw prints that you can view on their website.

Home burial is not the preferred aftercare option for euthanized pets due to the risks of groundwater contamination and ingestion of toxins by wildlife. However, private burial of euthanized pets is legal in Florida. If you decide to bury, we can provide you with a special burial bag, free of charge, that attempts to minimize environmental contamination. According to Florida law, you must bury your pet at least two feet below ground and avoid areas of flooding. You must also own the property on which you are burying your pet. See attached links for more details on the burial bags and Florida laws regarding burials.
More information to come. Please contact us for details on local pet cemeteries.
Please note that improper disposal or burial of euthanized animals can result in a fine and possible jail time due to the negative effects that euthanasia drugs cause to wild animals and the environment.
Please contact us if you are unsure about the safety of your aftercare plans. We will be happy to provide you with more guidance.
If your pet needs immediate medical attention, please call the UF Emergency Department, BluePearl Gainesville, UrgentVet Gainesville, CCVS Meadowbrook, or your regular veterinarian. We do not provide emergency care or primary care veterinary services.
